How to Apply TPU Patches to Textile? Heat Transfer and Stitching

📅 2025-08-304 min readBora Ajans

There are three main methods to attach a TPU patch to textile: heat transfer, stitching and ultrasonic welding. The application drives the choice.

📌 Heat Transfer (Heat Press)

The most common method for sportswear and footwear. The patch carries a heat-activated adhesive on the rear. A heat press at 130–160 °C and 4–8 bar for 10–20 seconds activates the adhesive and bonds the patch to fabric. Industrial wash safe.

📌 Stitching

Traditional method for jackets, bags and accessories. The patch has a sewing margin around the embossed area. Industrial sewing machines stitch the perimeter (and optionally tack the centre). Most secure method but adds production time.

📌 Heat Transfer + Stitching Combination

Common for premium sports kit. Heat-press first, then sew the perimeter. Combines speed of installation with extra security against industrial laundry stress.

📌 Ultrasonic Welding

Used in technical outerwear and waterproof applications. Ultrasonic energy melts a controlled depth of TPU into the fabric, creating a watertight bond without thread.

📌 Choosing the Right Method

  • Sportswear, footwear → heat transfer (fast, washable)
  • Traditional garments, bags → stitching (secure, premium)
  • Premium sport kit → heat transfer + stitching (best of both)
  • Waterproof outerwear → ultrasonic welding (no thread holes)

📌 Specifying Backing

Specify which method you will use at quote stage — we apply the appropriate backing layer. Default is heat-seal adhesive; sew-on margins and ultrasonic-ready backing are options.
